Home wireless networks are becoming very popular. Wireless networks are an easy way to use high-speed internet on multiple computers without running wires through the house. It also allows computer users with laptops to use them outside the house such as on the patio, by the pool or while soaking up some sun in the yard

But with the convience comes added security risks. In order to miumize these risks, there are steps you need to take. The 1st and the easiest of the steps is activate wireless encryption. There are two choices in wireless encryption WEP or WPA. The first Wireless equivilant privacy comes in 64 or 128 bit encryption. The second, Wi-Fi Protected Access comes in 256 bit encryption. WPA is much more secure than WEP. Something is better than nothing but if you have a choice, choose WPA. Also when buying new wireless equipment, insist on WPA.

Second, change the password on the router. Default passwords are regularly available on the internet. By changing the password, you make hacking your wireless network that much more difficult. When chosing a password, try not pick common words, names or pet names. If possible, try to make a random combo of letters and numbers such as h4ka5m9. Write the random combo down and place it somewhere safe.

Third, Media access contol filtering will prevent any not-permited wireless device from accessing your network.

Fourth, disable SSID (Service Set Identifier) broadcasting. That will help prevent drive-by hackers from detecting your network

Finally, don't get any more than you need in an wireless network. If you only need to network in one room, get 802A which has a hard time pentrating walls. If you need to network through walls, 802B or G is the way to go but remember, because it can penetrate the walls inside your home, it will also go outside your home which makes it even more important to secure your network with the steps above.
